July 19, 2010 ~ District Finals Coquitlam vs Whalley
Coming off the excitement of the semi-final victory over White Rock, the A’s came into the championship final with quiet confidence. This was definitely a different team than the one that had been beaten by 11 runs in the round-robin game against Whalley. Whalley got off to a quick start with the first three batters reaching base in the first inning and eventually scoring four runs. Brandon Jeon then proceeded to pitch two scoreless innings to keep the A’s in the game. Unfortunately, Jeon was hit in the wrist by a pitch while batting in the fourth inning and had to come out of the game. Heading into the fifth, the A’s knew they had to generate some offence and were able to load the bases on consecutive singles from Josh Mickelson and Thierry Parker, and a walk to Grifyn McErlean. Unfortunately, the timely hitting they received a day earlier didn’t come through in this game and all three runners were stranded. Whalley added one more run in the fifth and Coquitlam couldn’t respond, resulting in a 5-0 final. This brings the A’s run towards the Little League World Series to an end, but the team had a great post season. Thanks to all the players and parents for all their effort and time.
July 18, 2010 ~ Game 5 Coquitlam vs White Rock
The A’s came into this game looking for redemption after a lop-sided loss in the round-robin portion of the tournament. Coquitlam started early with lead-off hitter Sam Lee reaching on an error and coming around to score on a Colton Kehler single in the top of the first. The A’s added three more in the third. Austin Bousquet and Colton Kehler reached on a pair of singles and were both driven home by a Josh Mickelson double. Cole Nightingale followed with a triple to bring Mickelson home with the eventual winning run. Kehler started for the A’s and produced a dominating performance with 9 Ks in 4 and 2/3 innings while allowing only 1 hit. All three White Rock runs came in the fourth inning, aided by a pair of Coquitlam errors. Brandon Jeon came on to finish the fifth inning with one pitch. There were some nervous moments in the sixth as White Rock picked up three singles, but a base running error at third base cost them a chance at the tying run, and Jeon struck out 2 in the inning to secure the save. Coquitlam now faces Whalley in the District Final on Sunday!!
July 14, 2010 ~ Game 4 Coquitlam vs. N. Langley
Needing a win to secure third place and a playoff position, Coquitlam came into this game very confidently, and finished with a big 7-3 victory. Austin Bousquet started on the mound and pitched 1 and 1/3 scoreless innings before giving way to Brandon Jeon. Jeon pitched 3 and 2/3 innings, surrendering one unearned run and giving up only one hit. Josh Mickelson finished things off in the sixth inning. The offensive leader was lead-off hitter Sam Lee with a single and a triple and 2 runs scored, but the A’s got contributions from almost the whole line-up. With the victory, Coquitlam finishes 3rd in the round robin with a record of 2-2. The A’s now face White Rock in a semi-final game on Saturday.
July 12, 2010 ~ Game 3 Coquitlam vs. White Rock
Attempting to rebound after the disappointing loss to Whalley, Coquitlam sent Colton Kehler to the mound. Kehler produced 5 Ks in the first two innings in a dominating performance. Unfortunately, the A’s couldn’t take advantage offensively, stranding three runners in scoring position in the first two innings, leaving the score tied 0-0 at the time. In the third inning, the White Rock bats came alive and the A’s never got on track. White Rock scored 7 in the third, 1 in the fourth, and 6 in the fifth to take a 14-1 victory. The A’s will now need to defeat North Langley in their final round robin game to claim third position in pool play.
July 9, 2010 ~ Game 2 Coquitlam vs. Whalley
After a big victory in their first game, the A’s were looking to maintain the momentum against the tournament hosts. Unfortunately, Coquitlam found outs hard to get in the second inning and surrendered 10 runs, eventually losing 11-0. The main bright spot for the team was the two innings of shut-out pitching provided by Thierry Parker to settle things down. However, the A’s could not get runners aboard when it was their turn to bat. Next up is White Rock on Monday night.
July 9, 2010 ~ Game 1 Coquitlam vs. Langley
The A’s came out strong in the opening tournament game, downing Langley 9-0. Colton Kehler (3.33 innings, 7 Ks) and Will Beh (2.67 innings, 2Ks) combined to throw a no-hitter. The game was tight for the first two innings, tied 0-0 heading into the 3rd inning. Matt Danielli drew a lead-off walk and eventually scored on a Brandon Jeon single to get the team rolling. The A’s proceeded to load the bases with two out, and Josh Mickelson took a first-pitch fastball over the centrefield fence for a grand-slam home run. Coquitlam added runs in each of the next three innings to complete the victory.
