junior league wood bat Tournament

This is a mid-season tournament in the Junior schedule that offers a unique opportunity to the 13/14 year old players in the Lower Mainland. Part of CLL's Junior program, all of our teams are entered into this tournament which also includes house teams from other cities in our community! All together this is a 16 team tournament that allows the Juniors to trade in the 'PING' of aluminium for the 'CRACK' of a wood barrel, and brings on the experience of playing like the pros.

Our Coquitlam teams are set to slug it out this year with the likes of Whalley, Langley, and North Langley for the title. This year the Jr. Wood Bat is set as a 5 day tournament from May 20th - May 24th so be sure to mark it in GREEN on your calendar!

Wildcard berth to be determined by LEAST DEFENSIVE RUNS AGAINST in playoff round ONLY

Congratulations to the Coquitlam Cardinals for winning the annual Junior Wood Bat Tournament at Blue Mountain Park!

The Coquitlam Blue Jays, the Coquitlam Yankees and the Whalley Yankees all went 3-0 in the round robin, with the Blue Jays taking top spot with a measly 2 runs against. That set up an all Coquitlam semi, Blue Jays vs Cardinals, and an all Yankees semi, Coquitlam vs Whalley.

The Cardinals avenged yesterday's tough loss against the Jays (2-1) with a HUGE victory in the late stages of the game. Scoring 6 in the 4th, the Cardinals cruised to the win and waited on the winner of the Yankee/Yankee match up later in the afternoon.

The Coquitlam/Whalley final saw Whalley capitalize on an unusually quiet Coquitlam order as they held the bombers to just a single run over 5 innings. Staff ace, Brandon Becking was brought in and was very effective, however it was too little too late and the Whalley Yankees took a 2-1 victory.

The Coquitlam Cardinals/Whalley Yankees final was a rematch of their game earlier in the round robin and both teams were set for a great game. Coquitlam scored early and often on a depleated Whalley pitching staff. Scoring in every inning the Cards' bats were hot, and their rookie pitcher Derek Fong was hotter pitching 4 strong innings giving up a mere 2 earned runs. Derek was named player of the tournament pitching 8 innings over 2 days, on just 93 pitches with 2 earned runs, 9 Ks, 3 BB. Coquitlam coasted to victory as closer Cole Dowling was called in for the bottom of the 5th and retired the side in order.

Other considerations for player of the tourny include: Jim Barns making a couple of amazing grabs double off a couple of runners, and Austin MacDonald for making some spectacular pickoffs from behind the dish.

Coquitlam would like to extend a huge thanks to all the umpires that stepped up this weekend. There were some tough calls and we had the best crew to do the job. Thanks for making this such a fun tournament for everyone involved. Thanks again to Marc Reyes, Howard Maisey, Oliver Nugent, Mike Yamada, Brady Veltin, Curtis Starinovich, Joe Mallinson, and George Fengler.

Another big congratulations to the Coquitlam Cardinals for their big win!
