June 28, 2010 ~ 8 year old Selects

The Coquitlam 8 Year Old Selects served notice at this years District 3 tournament that we are not to be taken lightly!

After a rough start, losing 20-9 to Langley the boys came to life. We took Whalley right to the very last out before falling 12-11. Against North Langley, we came out on top by a score of 14-6. Day three saw us up against an undefeated White Rock A. Down by three going into the bottom of the sixth, we got it to 12-11 with two out, tying run on second before grounding out to first to end the game. Our last game we seemed to run out of gas a bit against White Rock B, but a late rally made the final score look a little more respectable, a 22-16 loss.

A 1-4 record may not look so good on paper, but the boys took the two top teams in the tournament right down to the wire. Great job Athletics, we'll be back !

June 20, 2010 ~ Coach's Game!!

A reminder to all coaches and fans, the CLL annual Coach's Game is scheduled for this weekend! Founder's Day is in the AM at the Yard, and then all coaches are invited up to Blue Mountain Park to show their skills and play a friendly. In previous years we have featured games such as Mackin vs Blue Mtn, Vets vs Rookies, as well as mixed squads.

Game time is 6:00pm!

The game tonight had a HUGE turnout! Special thanks to all the coaches who came up to Blue Mountain tonight for pizza and a game. The men split teams pitting Blue Mountain's coaching staff against the rest of the league, with a couple exceptions to round out a 11 man roster for Team Blue Mountain. After a strong 9 innings, the Blue Mountain crew managed to eek out a 10-6 victory, taking the title for the second year in a row!

The game was exciting from beginning to end, with the Mackin/Winslow/Rochester squad attributing their opponent's victory to a home field advantage. "GET A LEAD-OFF!!" was heard regularly from the visitor's dugout, and a few defensive errors proved costly.

Gracious winners, gracious losers... fun was had by all and we look forward to our game next year!

Click the photo below to check out the photo gallery from tonight.

June 5, 2010 ~ Unclaimed 50/50 Ticket

The 50/50 at the Yard was unclaimed on Saturday, May 8. The game was featuring the Major Cardinals vs the Major Giants at 3:30pm. The winner still has time to claim thier prize, however you MUST have the ticket in hand.

The winning number is 0039961.

May 31, 2010 ~ 2010 Hyack Tournament

Coquitlam put in a great showing at the Hyack Tournament this weekend as all three teams finished the round robin with 2-1 records. Both the Giants and Yankees started 2-0 but lost squeekers in their third games to get eliminated from the playoffs. The Cardinals were a little luckier as 2-1 for them meant a Bronze Medal game.

Due to the rain the Cardinals didn't start the Hyack until Sunday. After great pitching and defense in the 8:00 am game to beat New West Twins 5-2 it didn't go so well in the 1:00 pm game and the Cards lost 11-4 to Hastings Red Sox. This put both Hastings and New West at 2-1 and the Cards were 1-1. The Cards had to beat Forest Hills in the 3:30 game but not give up more than 10 runs to win their Pool. This same Forest Hills team beat the Cards at the Mackin Yard tournament last week 7-1 but everything came together in the 2nd of back-to-back games and the Cards won 15-3 in 4 innings. The game started with a bang as Colton Kehler launched a 3 run homer out of the softball stadium landing it on the walkway in left center some 270+ feet from home plate and there was no looking back.

This win put them up against the team that knocked off the Yankees, the Forest Hills Red Sox. Both teams were playing their fourth game of the day and third in a row so they were pretty tired. They battled hard and the Cards were leading 3-2 after 4 innings. In the top of the fifth the Cards sent all 12 batters to the plate scoring 7 runs. Forest Hills added one more run but the final was 10-3 giving the Cardinals the Bronze Medal. A great effort from all the Cardinal players to play 4 games in one day and a special thanks to Brandon Jeon and Nolan Smith of the Blue Jays for joining the Cards so they had a full 12 man roster.

June 5, 2010 ~ Founder's Day/Closing Ceremonies

June 5, 2010 ~ Unclaimed 50/50 Ticket

The winning number is 0207812.

May 11, 2010 ~ Taking Out The Garbage

Just a friendly reminder to all ballpark patrons: Please dispose of your garbage in the bins provided. There have been some recent issues with excess garbage being left amongst the bleachers and in the dugouts. Lets all do our part in keeping our ballparks beautiful and put garbage in it's place.

The City of Coquitlam and CLL would also like to remind concession staff that there are larger bins for concession garbage and cardboard. Please do not use the smaller park bins as they are overflowing on a daily basis.

Thank-You!!

April 8, 2010 ~ Updated Little League Rules for 2010

After publishing the 2010 rule book, Little League International held their annual Congress Meeting, and voted to accept a few changes in the rule book effective immediately. The ammendments are listed below:

  • Regulation IV – THE PLAYERS in the Baseball and Softball Rule Books has been amended to read, in part:
Tee Ball Division: Any candidate who will attain the age of 4 years before May 1 (Softball: January 1) and who will not attain the age of 8 before May 1 (Softball: January 1) of the year in question shall be eligible to compete in the Tee Ball Baseball/Softball Division (subject to the Local League Board of Directors alignment of this division). This means that a child who will be 8 years old on May 1 (Softball: January 1) or later, is eligible to play that year; a child who will be 8 years old on April 30 (Softball: December 31) or earlier will not be eligible for either Local League play or tournament play at any time during the calendar year in question.
    • Because registration has closed for the 2010 season, CLL will be adopting this rule to begin the 2011 season. This rule change effectively lowers the league age requirement for Blastball to 4 (from 5) years old, and also lowers the maximum age allowed in Blastball to 7 (from 8).
  • Regulation IX – SPECIAL GAMES in the Baseball and Softball Rule Books has been amended to read, in part: (f) Tournament teams may participate in Special Games only after June 15th.
    • This rule has been re-written to confirm that All-Star teams must not be picked or play together before June 15th.
  • Regulation VI – PITCHERS in the Baseball Rule Book has been amended to read, in part: (a) Any player on a regular season team may pitch. Exception: Any player, who has played the position of catcher in four (4) or more innings in a game, is not eligible to pitch on that calendar day.
    • This is a Catcher-Pitcher rule that is the reverse of the Pitcher-Catcher rule that was implimented last season. The rule book states that any pitcher that throws 41 or more pitches in a game may NOT play the position of catcher for the rest of the game. The new rule states that any catcher that catches more than 3 innings (9 outs) may NOT play the position of pitcher for the remainder of that game. These rules have been put into place to protect arms from injury.
  • Regulation VI (k) in the Baseball Rule Book has been amended to read: (k) Pitching in more than one game in a day:
    Minor League and Little League – A player may not pitch in more than one game in a day;
    Junior League and Senior League – A player may be used as a pitcher in up to two games in a day. (Exception: If the player pitched 31 or more pitches in the first game, that player may not pitch in the second game on that day);

Big League - A player may be used as a pitcher in up to two games in a day.
    • Beginning immediately, this permits a player on a Junior League Baseball or Senior League Baseball team to pitch in two games in one day, provided the player does not deliver 31 or more pitches in the first game. The Big League regulation remains unchanged. This also will apply during the International Tournament in the Junior League Baseball and Senior League Baseball divisions.

    March 25, 2010 ~ Field Work Parties

This weekend we are preparing our fields for a season long battle on the diamond. Its a big job cleaning, organizing, stocking, putting up fences and signs. We need as much help as we can get, so as Board members and Coaches, we are asking you to come out and lend a hand.

    Mackin: (Sunday, 10am)
Down at the Yard, we're going to need some help with general field maintenance, putting up signage etc. Coaches are going to get a walkthrough of the cage, outlining rules and expectations.

    Blue Mtn: (Saturday, 10am)
Because Blue Mountain is not a baseball only field, every year we have to set-up and take-down the outfield fence. Its a big job, but the ballpark just doesn't look right without it... and the Big Leaguers need something to shoot for right? We need some help, so bring out a 9/16 or 14mm deep socket and ratchet if you've got it, otherwise you can help move and position the fence in the outfield. Sponsorship signs also need to be set up, so please please come out and help us out.

February 2, 2010 ~ Bill Letcher Moves On
Regrettably Big League Coach Bill Letcher has announced he will be pursuing international ventures and will no longer be coaching with CLL. Buisness is taking him to Costa Rica where he will be settling in with his wife Gaby. CLL would like to thank Bill for everything he has done in strengthening our players and building our league. We wish Bill and Gaby the best of luck and hope Bill finds the time to continue coaching and we see him at the World Series!

    January 31, 2010 ~ Blue Mountain Pre-season Practices

Weekend pre-season practices have been scheduled for all players at Blue Mountain. Junior, Senior and Big League players are invited to a Winter workout on the field to get some reps in before evaluations. So far practices have been scheduled for 12pm on:

2010 is just around the corner, which means we are just that much closer to Spring Training! Coquitlam Little League is excited to announce 3 new clinics starting in the New Year that will cover all the basics to kick off the new season. A new Hitting Clinic with Shawn Bowman and Ryland Kathrein has been set to start January 4th, a Pitchig Clinic with Andrew Brock will start February 1st, and we are working on a Catching Clinic with Pat Phalen (aka Grumpy), dates TBA.

    Hitting Clinic: 8 sessions - Monday/Wednesday nights Jan. 4-27th - $80.00
Shawn Bowman and Ryland Kathrein have teamed-up to put together a twice weekly hitting clinic that will revamp your swing and boost your confidence going into the new season. Both Shawn and Ryland were members of the 1999 Juniors team that went to the Worlds and have used that experience as a spring-board in their baseball careers. Shawn has gone on to sign on with the NY Mets, where he has recently cracked the 40-man roster and has represented Canada in the World Baseball Classic and the World Baseball Cup. Ryland has continued to play baseball through his post-secondary years as he received a scholarship to play for the University of Arkansas in the NCAA Southwestern Conference. Together they form a dynamic power-hitting combo that will have your swing fine-tuned and ready for the 2010 season!

This 8 session schedule is set for Mon/Wed nights from January 4th to January 27th. Ages 8-12 are slotted in from 6pm-7pm, and 13+ year olds are slotted for 7pm-8pm. Total cost is $80.00.

    Pitching Clinic: 8 sessions - Monday/Wednesday nights Feb. 1-24th - $80.00
Andrew Brock was a memeber of the Big League team that represented Coquitlam and Canada and 2000 World Series where they became the 1st ever Canadian Champs. Andrew stayed competitive and received a full scholorship from the University of Idaho as a pitcher where he was a 3-year starter with a 13-10 record and a 3.23 ERA. Andrew has also represented Canada numerous times at the World Baseball Challenge where he has won 3 gold medals. Coquitlam Little League is proud to have him return to his roots and set up this pitching clinic.

This is also an 8 session schedule running Mon/Wed nights from Feb. 1st to 24th at the Blue Mountain cage. Ages 9-12 are slated for 6-7pm and ages 13+ are set for 7-8pm. Total cost is $80.00
