Water: the most important thing to put in your body

We’ve all been told to drink water, but why? How much?

Our body is made up of 60% water which is why our body cannot function at its best without enough of it. When you play video games, do you only use one hand? No, because you need both hands to be as good as you can, but each day we only drink half or less than the amount of water we need for our real body to be as strong, fast, alert and smart as possible.

Water is free, doesn’t taste bad and isn’t bad for you! Water is great for your skin, has been proven to help students learn more and make you feel better by flushing out the bad stuff in our bodies. If that isn’t enough, water makes you a better athlete. Think about Kraft Dinner, when you have boiled the noodles, they are slippery and move around easy. When powdered cheese is added, there is not enough water and the noodles stick together. This happens to your muscles. Without enough water, all of the little muscle fibers that make up your body stick together; causing injury, or muscles to tense up and not be loose when needed most (swinging a bat, fielding a ball).

The ‘average’ person should drink 8 glasses of water a day. During a game of baseball, a 160lb person will lose 4-5lbs in sweat. For those of you that exercise daily, you should have at least 10 glasses. A great way to remember is to draw a mark on each of your 10 knuckles when you have a glass of water and try to mark each knuckle daily. Bringing a water bottle with you to school is a good idea to make sure that water is always around… and whenever you pass a water fountain, stop and grab a drink!

The easiest way to know if you need more water is when you go to the bathroom. If your urine is not clear, you need more water!
